Bathroom Tile Failure: Why Spot Fixing Can Cost You Triple

A bathroom should last far longer than a few years. In this video, I show a bathroom that was already falling apart around the six-year mark. Behind the finished tiles were isolated blobs of adhesive, large gaps and the wrong glue for the job. The homeowner is now facing a rebuild at triple the original cost.

What is spot fixing?

Spot fixing means sticking tiles on with separate blobs of adhesive instead of achieving the coverage and support the installation needs. The finished surface can look tidy while hiding large unsupported areas behind the tiles.

Once this bathroom was opened up, those shortcuts were clear. The video shows the adhesive pattern left behind, and I explain why the glue used was unsuitable for this installation. A neat grout line cannot make up for a poor bond underneath.

Why adhesive coverage and the right glue matter

For me, a lasting tile installation starts with proper surface preparation, the right glue for the job and good adhesive coverage. I check the bond as the tiles go on and back-butter where needed. Those are the details that matter behind the finished surface.

Spot fixing leaves voids and reduces the area supporting the tile. In this bathroom, the gaps behind the tiles were clear once the failed work was removed. For me, choosing the right glue and getting proper adhesive coverage are essential parts of doing the job properly.

Paying for the same bathroom again

As I explain in the video, this owner is now paying triple to put the bathroom right. That is the cost of this particular job, rather than a prediction for every repair. The problem surfaced around the end of the warranty period the owner had been relying on.

Years later, higher labour and material prices add to the burden. There is also the cost of stripping out the failed work and preparing the bathroom for a proper rebuild. What looked like a finished renovation has become another major expense and disruption.

What homeowners can learn from this job

Before choosing a tiler, check their qualifications, references and previous bathroom work. Ask how they prepare the walls, choose compatible adhesives and waterproofing products, and check adhesive coverage as the tiles go on. Progress photos can help document the work that will eventually be hidden.

For me, this is why workmanship matters. Homeowners deserve a bathroom built with care from the surface preparation through to the final tile. Shortcuts behind the tiles can become very expensive once the job is finished.
