When Your Stone Tiles Need Sealing

When it comes to preserving the beauty and longevity of your stone tiles—whether they’re marble, granite, limestone, or any natural stone—sealing plays a pivotal role. In this guide, I walk you through a simple water test that can help you determine exactly when your tiles need sealing. By the end, you’ll understand not just how to perform this test, but why sealing is vital for both indoor and outdoor stone applications.

The water test I demonstrate is straightforward but incredibly telling. All you need is a small amount of water. I show how to splash a bit onto the stone surface and observe how the tile reacts. If the stone darkens significantly, it’s a clear sign that the stone is absorbing the water and is therefore in need of sealing. On the other hand, if the tile remains mostly unchanged—no darkening—then it’s protected, and you can wait a bit longer before sealing. This quick test is a simple way to stay ahead of potential damage.

Why is this so important? Stone tiles, especially when used outdoors, are highly vulnerable to environmental factors. Sunlight, rain, and even pool chemicals can slowly degrade the surface. Without a proper seal, your stone can etch, stain, and lose its luster. In fact, around pools—where there are chemicals like chlorine—this degradation can happen even faster. Sealing your outdoor stone at least once a year is a small investment that can save you from costly repairs down the road.

Indoors, the situation is a bit different. Polished marble, for example, may have a beautiful glossy surface, but it is still porous. I show how, even indoors, a simple annual sealing can help maintain that shine and protect against stains from spills. However, it’s crucial to note that we don’t recommend using these polished stone tiles in wet areas, like showers. Even with sealing, trapped moisture can lead to etching or mold. So, for bathrooms or showers, we strongly suggest using a non-porous tile material instead.

In the kitchen, sealing is equally vital, as food and liquids can leave stains. While polished marble is popular in kitchens for its elegance, it’s important to remember that it can still stain if not sealed annually. The key is to balance that natural look with a little bit of care—sealing once a year will give you that extra protection and ensure your stone tiles stay stunning for years to come. So, by adopting this simple water test and making sealing a yearly habit, you can maximize the lifespan of your stone, keep it looking fresh, and avoid costly repairs down the road.
