Why I Waterproof My Own Bathrooms as a Tiler— Ensuring Angles and Prep Are Perfect.

In this video, I explain why I choose to waterproof my own bathrooms as a tiler, ensuring angles and prep are perfect every time. As a professional tiler, I’ve learned that the accuracy of waterproofing is just as crucial as the tiling itself. By taking control of the waterproofing process, I ensure that everything is set out exactly to my tiling lines. I align the water stop in the shower perfectly square to the longest wall, which is the wall that I set all my tiles from. This attention to detail ensures that the waterproofing lines up exactly with my tile layout. I also set the water stop in the shower 5 millimeters higher than the finished tile height, giving me that extra safeguard against any water ingress. Similarly, the water stop at the door is also aligned square to the same longest wall and runs parallel, ensuring everything is symmetrical and exact. By doing all of this myself, I avoid the common issues that can arise when a separate waterproofer does the job. Often, other waterproofer-only contractors might set angles incorrectly or not align them to the tiling layout. This can lead to issues later, with misaligned lines or uneven surfaces. I prefer to keep the entire process under my control so that the waterproofing and tiling work together seamlessly. Another reason I do it myself is that I avoid lumps or uneven spots in the waterproofing. I take pride in ensuring a smooth, flawless surface so that my tiles can be laid down perfectly. I’m also fully confident that the membrane I use is compatible with my tile adhesive. I choose products that I know work well with my tiling materials, giving me peace of mind that the waterproofing will not fail. In addition to that, I avoid any potential disputes. If a failure ever happens down the track, I know I can stand by my work. There’s no risk of a tiler blaming a separate waterproofer or a waterproofer blaming me. It’s all on me, and I take full responsibility for both the prep and the final outcome. By doing this, I can ensure a long-lasting, reliable waterproofing system that perfectly supports my tiling work. If you’re a tiler or a DIYer, I hope this video and my process give you confidence to take control of your waterproofing, ensuring that your tiling work is always built on a solid foundation. disclaimer: "Please note, the method I demonstrate in this video is the way I personally handle waterproofing as a tiler, based on my experience and preferences. Every project is unique, so I recommend consulting with a licensed professional if you have any doubts or need a different approach for your specific situation.
