In this detailed tutorial, I walk you through how I install a smart waste (floor waste) in a cement bed before waterproofing and tiling. This step is critical for ensuring proper drainage and correct alignment. I begin by placing a dummy PVC pipe as a temporary guide, so no cement falls down into the main drain, ensuring it stays open. Once the pipe is set, I lay down the smart waste (floor waste) right on top. I then use it as my template, measuring a 5-millimeter gap around its perimeter. After that, I carefully dig down to the correct depth, ensuring I leave enough room for the tile and adhesive. By doing it this way, I ensure everything is aligned and there’s just the right amount of space for movement. You can also use other templates—sometimes the packaging box the smart waste comes in or a piece of timber—but I prefer this method because it lets me fine-tune the height precisely. Follow along as I show you each step, and by the end, you'll have a perfectly aligned waste system, ready for the next stages of waterproofing and tiling.
